Perhaps it is a blessing when Jasmine Dent dies in her sleep. At last an end has come to the suffering of a body horribly ravaged by disease. It may well have been suicide; she had certainly expressed her willingness to speed the inevitable. But small inconsistencies lead her neighbor, Superintendent Duncan Kincaid, to a startling conclusion Dent was murdered. But if not for mercy, why would someone destroy a life already doomed? As Kincaid and his appealing assistant Sergeant Gemma James sift through the dead woman's strange history, a troubling puzzle emerges a bizarre amalgam of charity and crime--and of the blinding passions that can drive the human animal to perform cruel and inhuman acts.

This is a solid, entertaining installment in a series of which I am quickly becoming a fan. In fact, I am a bit slow in writing this review and have already finished the third book as well. They just get better and better so number four is already waiting on my Kindle.

A more traditional English mystery, with no blood and gore or foul language, this book is a great way of spending a few relaxing evenings in front of the fire or anywhere else you can get comfortable for a very enjoyable read. The mystery is well plotted and one of the things I particularly like about it is the main character works for Scotland Yard so there is no need to suspend disbelief around understanding why he is investigating the death of his neighbor. The neighbor had terminal cancer and her death wasn't a surprise but certain aspects of it don't quite fit in Duncan Kincaid's mind and he asks questions and begins an investigation to get to the truth of the matter. The Duncan Kincaid character is fleshed out more and more as the books progress and is a largely likeable fellow, but not perfect by any means. Getting to understand him and watch his development over the pages is a nice addition to a very good mystery. While it wouldn't be absolutely necessary to start at the beginning of the series and work your way through, I believe that to get the most out of them, it would be the best way to go about it. As the writer divulges more about the primary two characters and the reader comes to know them, the book is that much richer as a result.

Bottom line: Highly recommended for fans of good, intelligent mysteries - a bit of mystery combined with well-written literary prose.

All Shall Be Well (Audible Audio Edition) Deborah Crombie Michael Deehy Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

A terminally ill woman dies in her sleep. It's soon discovered that Jasmine Dent was contemplating suicide. But her neighbor happens to be Duncan Kincaid, a chief inspector of Scotland Yard. He has suspicions that the death may not be what it seems.

There are few suspects, all unlikely murderers a neighbor, a retired Major who loves to garden; a highly qualified home care nurse; a young brother who seems too ineffectual to kill; a young friend who is clearly too soft-hearted for murder; and the young friend's boyfriend, a creep who had a possible motive but no opportunity to kill.

Kincaid's feelings for Jasmine add depth to the story. He visited the sick woman often after work, attracted by her intelligence, her equanimity and her dry wit. Although Jasmine was beautiful, she was almost fifty. And Kincaid is a young man. Yet their relationship was infused with a certain romantic charm.

The carefully suppressed attraction between Kincaid and his assistant, Sergeant Gemma James, is also interesting. There's an electricity between these two that makes the reader wonder what the future holds. I'll have to keep following the series to see. But right now they simply make ideal investigative partners, he obsessing over odd little details, she always arguing sense.

The ending is surprising, maybe a little too surprising since certain information emerges without warning. But I enjoyed the gentle pace of the plot and feeling of being in England. The lack of blood and gore, a rarity in contemporary crime fiction, was kind of nice.
Crombie's second Kincaid/James mystery is a solid follow-up to her very good debut novel, "A Share In Death."

I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised at the difference between her first two books. The first book finds Kincaid on vacation, investigating a murder, and the search for the murderer. In this, her second book, it's almost as if the murder is secondary to the story. In fact, there's not much evidence that there was a murder -- Kincaid calls it a 'gut-reaction'. And, for a brief while, his partner, Sergeant Gemma James thinks that Kincaid is letting his friendship with the deceased cloud his judgement.

There's not much action in this book, so if you're looking for a roller-coaster ride, or even a story with a lot of suspense, this might not be the book for you. That being said, it is a testament to Crombie's storytelling/writing skills that make this novel so interesting. This book is more about the characters than the murder itself. In some ways, this book is little more than a series of dialogues between various characters, yet Crombie carries it off so well that there's not a single boring moment in the book. It's not a long book (just under 300 pages), and the pages fly by. I was rather disappointed that the story ended.

Again, if you're looking for a fast-paced, action packed tale, this is not it. If, however, you enjoy a book filled with interesting characters, that slowly unfolds, revealing its secrets, then this book is definitely for you.
I haven't read a Deborah Crombie mystery for several years and was glad to go back to her with this book. This is a somewhat sad story because the victim was suffering from terminal cancer and the reader doesn't know her death is suicide, as she planned, or murder. As Duncan reads the diaries of the victim we come to know her more intimately than often occurs with the victim in other mysteries. The suspects as well are sympathetic, except for a boyfriend of one of the suspects. The author has realized each one through the investigations of Duncan and Gemma. The setting around London also is carefully crafted. The relationship between Duncan and Gemma has started to develop and I found it more satisfying in this book than in many of Ms. Crombie's later books when their relationship has blossomed. The story is delicately written, the tone is somewhat wistful. A really good read.
One reason I enjoy Deborah Crombie's books is the sense of looking into lives in a multi dimensional way- what does Duncan see, what is Gemma's perspective? And each individual they engage with - who is this person, what dreams or griefs are theirs? The plots and subplots are well developed, and I'm always grateful not to be confused about who the many characters are.
Technically superb and emotionally satisfying, her books keep me reading far into, and often through, the night.
